M106 was discovered by Pierre Mechain – Charles Messier had probably never observed this galaxy that was added to his catalogue in 1948. M106 is an amazing large spiral galaxy of type SAb about 25.7 million light years apart. M106 is an active Seyfert galaxy. Some more NGC galaxies are visible in the neighborhood of M106 – the elongated object north west of M106 is NGC4248.
