M 106

M 106 was discovered by Pierre Mechain – Charles Messier probably had never seen this galaxy that was added to his catalogue in 1948. M 106 is an amazing large spiral galaxy of type SAb about 25.7 million light years apart. It is an active Seyfert galaxy. Some more NGC galaxies are visible in the neighbourhood of M106 – the elongated object north west of M 106 is NGC 4248.
